Take 5 is a new feature in which we chat with someone each issue who's making waves in the area or are related to an upcoming event.

This issue, we talk with DJ Sabi, who has built a name for herself throughout the state for her unique mix of music. She's been seen at some of the biggest and best clubs throughout Connecticut, but her latest move sees her added to Gotham Citi's already impressive Saturday night line-up.  She makes her Gotham debut on Saturday, January 22 during the annual Snow Ball.

Q. How did you get your start as a DJ?
A. I had been learning to dj and doing friends parties whenever I had a chance and open turntable nights at a club named Function in New Haven. Then I met Ilene from the CT Lesbian party Femfactory. She was looking for a female DJ. The rest is history.

Q. What was your first gig like?
A. I was horrified. I remember my hand shaking as I put the needle to the record. After the first couple of records I saw people dancing and having a good time which put me at ease and It's definitely what I knew I wanted to do.

Q. What artists do you most enjoy listening to?
A. Carl Cox will always have a special place in my heart. For me lately it's been all about Seth Troxler. He's a young super talented DJ that is making waves. Also Cassie has a way of touching me and making me cry everytime I hear her live because she's that good but there are too many to continue listing. I just love music.

Q. Do you have a particular gig that stands out in your mind as your favorite?
A. Recently I did koji for the first time for their Gei-Sha Tuesday. There was magic in the air. I played what I wanted and everyone went nuts. There were people on the bar blowing fire just releasing positive energy. It was the first time in Conn. that I felt a vibe like that. Definitely one that will stick out for a long time.

Q. What's your favorite part about being a DJ?
A. Making people happy as I get to express my passion in music. I'm very lucky to get to do that. If people leave smiling then i did my job. I'm not here for a long time but I'm definitely here for a good time.

Q. Is there a part about being a DJ that's not so fun?
A. Working late when you have work in the morning. A girl needs her beauty sleep!

Q. Where can people currently catch you spinning?
A. I have a bi-weekly residence at Partners on Fridays and Polo in Hartford on Saturdays. A new Sunday residence at Koji and a monthly at Gotham starting january 22nd which I'm really excited about. Gotham was the first gay club I went to in Conn. so it's quite an honor to get to play there.

Q. What should people who are catching you at Gotham Citi for the first time expect?
A. Your body to be sore the next day because I'm gonna make you dance!
