For Gotham Citi, 13 is most definitely a lucky number.
That's because this month, Gotham has reached its 13th anniversary, and the only sweat broken is of those on the always-packed dancefloor and of the employees who work so hard each week to make it possible.
The club, part of the Titan Entertainment Complex, continues to evolve as it continues its tradition as Connecticut's longest-running alternative night. A renovation of the upper level last summer, along with the upcoming rollout of a cabaret room, aims to keep the club fresh while remaining inviting and familiar. The music has been beefed up too, with DJ Robbie being added to the first floor, while DJ Boy Ric maintains his legendary house residency, 11 years strong now, on the 2nd floor.
It's apropos that the club, which has a history of its own, is in a building with its own history. The basement, home to Oz, the after-hours part of the complex, features a marble dance floor that is over 100 years old. Meanwhile, Oz remains the biggest after-hours event, which is open each weekend until 5 a.m.
Gotham's continued to collect accolades for its gay night, scoring another New Haven Advocate voter's poll nod in 2008 with the "Best Gay Night at a Bar." Last year, Out Magazine also named Gotham Citi one of the 50 Greatest Gay Bars in the World. In the Advocate's write-up on Gotham's latest win, they noted accurately: "Gotham was founded as a gay club and its Saturday nights are still famous: pounding house music, the always-packed club draws a gay clientele from throughout the region."
Gotham's anniversary celebration is a bit bigger than previous years, stretching across April with drink specials each Saturday. April 18th is the official 13th Anniversary celebration, which should be a blast.
Gotham is already preparing for the annual New Haven Pride Block party, an annual tradition that grows by the year and has maintained a tradition for the GLBT community in the New Haven area.
As Gotham heads into the middle of its second decade, it's obvious that Robb Bartolomeo and his employees continue to keep Gotham fresh and exciting, offering occasional fun theme nights and great New York City house music. Meanwhile, Gotham remains the best way to see friends on a Saturday night and have some fun while you're at it.
