Late September 1990
Life partners Bob Craig and Kim Hunter united themselves during a commitment ceremony before God and 50 observants at the Unitarian Meeting House in Bloomfield. Rev. Patricia Leffler officiated the service that took place on Sept. 8, 1990.
“I perform ten to fifteen of these life commitment services each year,” Rev. Leffler said at the ceremony, “and although they are not considered legal in the eyes of the state, they are very real moral commitments in the eyes of God. The feelings two same-sex people have for each other is reinforced and, hopefully, their bond grows stronger with the acceptance of their vows.”
And in other news: Molly Yard, President of The National Organization for Women, charges that the United States Military is guilty of bigotry and homophobia towards gays and lesbians in the military.
Former TRAXX sound man, Bruce Masi of Manchester, died in an emergency landing that he was attempting to make in a rented 4-seater, single engine plane he was piloting in Long Island. Also on board were Masi’s wife Peggy Ann and 6-year daughter Amanda, both were seriously injured in the crash. Masi had been a familiar figure in the Hartford area, having worked as a deejay and sound engineer at Hartford clubs such as Boppers, Backstreet, Warehouse II and the Body Shop.
In an unprecedented move, Republicans for Individual Freedoms, a gay Republican group, announced their plans to support Democrat Harvey Gantt for the senate seat held by Republican Jesse Helms. The endorsement marked the first and only time the group endorsed a Democrat. According to RIF founder and President, Gary Bastin, the decision to throw Helms out of his seat was unanimous. “52% of our members voted by mail ballot to endorse Gantt, 48% wanted to demand that Helms be thrown out the Republican seat. Not one single member expressed support of Helms.”
