School is in Session

This issue we continue our partnership with the New Haven Pride Center by bringing you an article written recently by Robin McHaelen of True Colors for one of their recent newsletters.  McHaelen offers a boatload of tips relating to the new school year, no matter whether you’re a student, teacher, family member, friend or observer.

Hey guys.  Now that summer’s over (where the hell did it go?  Oh yeah, it barely arrived as it was), it’s Back to School time again.  Those of you in school probably started a little earlier this year; Labor Day fell a little later on the calendar.  Of course, whether that will be necessary depends on who you believe; the Farmer’s Almanac says it will be a colder than normal winter; the National Weather Service says it will be warmer than normal.  Weathermen get paid a lot of money to guess.  I think I’m in the wrong line of work.

But I digress. Everyone can learn something from what she has to offer, just as so many of our community’s youth can learn something from the annual True Colors conference, which we covered in depth earlier this year.  It’s so wonderful to have such an expert in our backyard, and we are pleased to share a bit of her wisdom with you.

Elsewhere we have an article by Bryan Herb, who you may have seen on Logo recently.  He started a travel company after 9/11, realizing he should do something as a career that he would really enjoy.  He’s launched Zoom Vacations, and as such has learned a lot about what makes for a good gay vacation.  He shares with us some thoughs about Rio’s annual Carnival, which is about five months away, but if you’re planning to go, now’s the time to start thinking about it.

Beyond that we have our regular stable of writers: Terri looks behind the curtain of Merv Griffin’s life and finds it all quite overwhelming; Josh praises David Guetta’s efforts to bring the R&B and dance communities together; Wayne Besen examines the idea of purity and whether it’s a healthy pursuit; Mette Bach takes a chance by going on a dinner and dancing Pride cruise; and Uncle Blabby tackles the age-old (or at least back to Clinton) question: Boxers or Briefs?

Finally, I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention that Metroline is expanding, even in this challenging economy.  We are reaching into Long Island, and we launch our coverage there with an Out & About from the SHY Lounge, which has gay nights on Wednesdays and Saturdays.  While we won’t forget our home base is in Connecticut, we look forward to offering a wider view of the area.

As always, I hope to see you Out & About.
