Lieberman’s Smart Move

I hope you like the cover of this issue. Actually, I am sure you did. Just as I am sure hardly anyone reads this section. But I joke.

Anyway, as we were preparing the contents of this issue, I was almost knocked out of my chair when I read the news release from Senator Joseph Lieberman’s office stating he was taking the lead on repealing the military’s “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” policy. I mean, here is a guy that has pretty much single handedly caused a revolt in Connecticut over re-instituting the ability to recall an elected politician from office. He has outraged many with his

Independent/Democrat party affiliation but follows the Republican party like one if its most loyal sheep. And here he is coming out of the box as the chief sponsor of the repeal movement. WOW. Just when you think you have someone from Washington figured out they throw another tack at you.

No matter how you look at it, it is a historical landmark in the movement towards true equality for gay people in the United States.

But do not think it’s in the bag yet. Many laws that are proposed in good faith get mired down in politics and end up never seeing the light of day. As it stands, we have a President, a Secretary of Defense, A Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and one of the country’s most respected past Secretary of State and former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, all backing overturning the DADT policy. But then we have a couple of Generals publicly making statements against it. Gen. Casey, the Army Chief of Staff, and Gen. Norton, the Air Force Chief of Staff releasing what has been called “Carefully Considered Language” in statements advising now is not the time. “Little research has been done regarding the reaction of such a change.”

Well, General Frick and Frat, that’s a bunch of bull. And if you are going to lie to the country, well that is not very honorable nor consistant with participation in the Personal Reliability Program which is required for anyone involved with our country’s nuclear weapons program. So, the two of you should either re-think your BS statements or resign.  The fact is that Gay and Lesbian soldiers and sailors are serving right now. They are integrated in the force that is currently deployed and fighting the wars we are involved in RIGHT NOW, as we have in every war since the beginning of time. There is no time needed to make a change and study the effects or any of the other crap the homophobes are spewing forth with.

Call your representative and tell them we don’t need any long anything. Stop the policy now, and let us get on with the business at hand which is defending the country, not perpetuating discrimination based on ignorance.
